There’s a common thread that runs through all of Brandt Brauer Frick’s music. It is this: interesting things happen at the interface of machine and hand-made music. The Berlin trio’s 2010 album, ‘You Make Me Real’, fused techno and classical. The 2011 follow-up, ‘Mr Machine’, saw them go the whole classical-meets-club hog with a ten-piece ensemble playing dance music live. Then, earlier this year, came ‘Miami’, a darker, more song-based collection exploring the same man-machine ideas. The Berlin trio’s instalment of the DJ-Kicks series does the same thing with a mix. Not for them the algorithmic rigidity of cutting and pasting tracks together on Ableton.
They recorded the mix in one day, out of hours at Berlin’s legendary Watergate club, using only vinyl and dub plates. “We didn’t want to record it in our studio or at home, mainly because we preferred an intense session with limited time,” explains Paul Frick. “That feels more like a unique situation and it enforces the tension and the necessity to do it right.
Because we mixed it live there are mistakes and flaws, some rougher transitions in there. We are not super technical DJs. We like it when you hear those imprecisions because it’s human. It feels like someone is behind the mix, rather than a computer.” After all the conceptualising, perhaps most importantly of all, the end result is that rare thing: a dancefloor mix full of emotion. Interesting things happen when humans and machines meet. Tracklist: CD: 01.

Soul Clap Tour
exclusively produced for DJ-Kicks. There's a certain mystique to the life of a touring musician: new places and people every day, not a lot of sleep, the rush of performing, the monotony of transportation. In their new music video for the DJ-Kicks exclusive track 'Hugo,' have found a way to encapsulate the experience in short form, using a rapidfire montage format culled from over 15,000 pictures shot during their recent performances. Watch the video and read Daniel Brandt's description below. DJ-Kicks is out this week, and available at local record stores as well as, and the. As everyone produces a big mass of photos/data on a regular basis since the smartphone is in everyone's hands, nobody is ever able to actually go through them anymore.
The moments of looking back actually never happen. To take this even further we invented a new happening while touring called the 'Shoot out.' In a shoot out everyone takes out their smartphone and tries to take as many photos of all other people involved as possible which results in having loads of photos from different perspectives. This was the starting point of this video and also the need to have those photos not be completely lost in piles of data no one will ever go through again. It was more of a practical solution of getting those photos from the past two years into a context that people will actually see them but we also don't need to bore them off with a slide show at home as no one wants to look at personal photos from other people anymore longer than a second (except our parents). The video consists of a selection from originally around 15.000 photos. Daniel Brandt.
As the February 24th release date of Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks draws closer, the Berlin trio has shared another of their exclusive compositions from the mix. Compared to ',' another original which debuted in December, 'Hugo' is slightly more reserved, though no less driving. Staccato synths evoke a strobe-lit dancefloor before giving way to chugging house grove laced with the group's signature tactile percussive sounds. Stream 'Hugo' below.
A is also available when signing up to Brandt Brauer Frick's email list. DJ-Kicks will be available in stores on February 24th, and pre-orders are no available through, and the. It's always a pleasure for us when an artist mines their community of creative contemporaries for custom, exclusive tracks for their mixes. Brandt Brauer Frick's DJ-Kicks features five such tracks (as well as three new ones of their own) which they pressed up on one-of-a-kind dubplates in order to record their mix using only vinyl.
Glenn Astro's 'How I Miss You' is a haunting number whose mood fits the yearning of the vocal refrain. The full mix, which the trio recorded in the DJ booth at Berlin's mega club Watergate, is out on February 24th. In addition to three new tracks from Brandt Brauer Frick themselves, the upcoming DJ-Kicks mixed by Berlin’s trio of Daniel Brandt, Jan Brauer and Paul Frick also features several exclusive pieces of music from their extended artistic circle.
Which means the guys had to press quite a few custom dubplates in order to stick to their plan of recording the mix strictly from vinyl during a day-long session at the famed club Watergate. All of which goes to show you just how dedicated these guys are, and what a special mix they’ve created. Daniel Brandt explains how he first connected with fellow Berlin-based producer Cosmin TRG below, where you can also stream Cosmin’s contribution to the mix.
“I met Cosmin through the Red Bull Music Academy, and we have been talking about various collaborative projects ever since. I was always into his rough sound and he’s a great DJ. That’s why we asked him to do a track for the Kicks, and the track he delivered was a perfect tune to have in the harder section of the mix. It also is the perfect follow up for the Bok Bok & Tom Trago track before it, to level up the energy even more, and mixes very well with the MMM track afterwards.” DJ-Kicks is available February 24th. Pre-Order DJ-Kicks:.
The artistic development of from their debut album You Make Me Real in 2010 to this year's watershed Miami has been thrilling to watch. The rigid formula of their early work (techno arrangements, acoustic instruments) has given way to a more catholic approach to music making, all the while retaining the tactile, polyrhythmic elements that make the trio's sound so immediate. The group's entry to the DJ-Kicks series gives them the chance to further showcase their many talents; this time as curators and DJs. Wary of the sterility of some computer assembled mixes, they opted to record the mix live, during a daytime session at the legendary Berlin club Watergate, using all vinyl.
As the mix contains eight previously unheard exclusive tracks (three new Brandt Brauer Frick productions and five from the group's artist community), they pressed up special vinyl dubplates of material for the mix, once again prizing a human, hand-held aesthetic even while collecting an essential batch of edgy electronic music. One of the exclusive new Brandt Brauer Frick tracks from the mix can be heard below, as premiered earlier today. DJ-Kicks will be released on February 24th, 2014. Full track list after the jump.
